Licensing
Piqued FM is an independent platform for electronic and experimental music. This page explains where the music and audio on piqued.fm, including in the Piqued FM mobile app, comes from, and how the rights to it work. It sits alongside our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
We are a first-party service
Piqued FM is owned and operated by Piqued FM ("Piqued FM," "we," "us"). We operate both the piqued.fm website and the official Piqued FM mobile app. The way third-party content is handled differs between the two, so we describe each below.
In the Piqued FM app
The mobile app is our official first-party client. All audio in the app is content that Piqued FM publishes through its own content management system and hosts on its own infrastructure. The app does not connect to, scrape, index, embed, or re-stream any third-party streaming service, catalog, or discovery API, it does not access Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, SoundCloud, or any other external music service. Everything you hear in the app is served by Piqued FM.
On the piqued.fm website
The website hosts and serves the same Piqued FM audio described below. In addition, the website lets featured artists showcase their own external work: where an artist chooses to link to or embed their own YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, or similar profiles and releases, we surface that material through those services' official embeds and public APIs. That content is hosted and delivered by the respective third-party service under its own terms, remains the artist's, and is displayed at the artist's direction to help promote their work. Piqued FM does not scrape, copy, or re-host it, and these embeds appear only on the website, not in the app.
Where our audio comes from
The audio on Piqued FM falls into three categories:
Live performances at our own events. The large majority of our audio consists of live performances recorded at events that Piqued FM organizes and hosts. We invite guest producers and performers to these events, where they perform original music they created themselves, much of it improvised live using their own synthesizers and equipment. We record these performances with the artists' permission.
Artist-supplied recordings. A smaller portion consists of recordings that artists provide to us directly, published alongside interviews, features, or reviews on Piqued FM.
DJ sets and mixes. A limited number of recordings are DJ sets or mixes submitted to us by the performing artist. As with any DJ set, these may incorporate other creators' recordings. The submitting artist is responsible for the content of their set and, by submitting it, confirms they have the rights necessary for us to host and distribute it (see below).
Rights and permissions
- Artists keep their rights. Artists and contributors retain ownership of their performances, compositions, and recordings. Piqued FM claims no ownership of contributor works beyond the license described here.
- Contributor license. By performing at a Piqued FM event, or by submitting a recording, mix, or DJ set to Piqued FM, each artist grants Piqued FM a non-exclusive, worldwide license to record, host, reproduce, stream, and distribute that performance or recording on piqued.fm and in the Piqued FM app.
- Rights warranty. Each contributing artist represents and warrants that their submission is their own original work, or that they otherwise hold all rights and permissions necessary to grant the license above and to allow Piqued FM to distribute the content.
- First-party operation. Piqued FM distributes this content as the operator of the piqued.fm service and the official Piqued FM application.
