Kevin Saunderson runs Roland's 909 Day workshop on the TR-909 and TR-1000

Roland held its 909 Day event on Saturday 12 September at the Underground Music Academy in Detroit, where Kevin Saunderson and Roland's Dustin Good spent three hours working through the TR-909 and the newer TR-1000. The full session is now on YouTube.

The workshop ran from 3 to 6 p.m. EDT and was free either way: in person on registration through Eventbrite, or on the livestream. Roland also ran an interactive version of the session through Roland Cloud Academy.

Saunderson is one of the Belleville Three, the Detroit producers credited with starting techno, and founded KMS Records. He was an early adopter of the TR-909. He and Good covered sequencing, sound design and live performance technique on both machines, setting the TR-1000's 9X engines against the original.

Roland premiered a new installment of its animated series The Rhythm Creators around the event. The episode traces the TR-909's part in the origins of Detroit techno, narrated by Saunderson and animated by Detroit artist Vaughn Taormina.
