Music Thing Modular has released the Radio Music mk2, a ground-up redesign of its 4HP Eurorack sample player. Thonk is taking pre-orders now, with shipping set for October 2026.

The module plays WAV, AIFF and RAW files from a microSD card, sorted into as many as 16 stations. Files the listener is not tuned to keep advancing in the background, so switching stations lands in the middle of a file rather than at its start. The first Radio Music appeared in 2014 and was discontinued during the 2021 chip shortage, according to Synth Anatomy.

Music Thing says the mk2 is “a collaboration between Tom Whitwell of Music Thing Modular and Chris Johnson of Plus Minus Audio”. The hardware and the software are both new, and mk1 units cannot be updated to it, though mk1 SD cards work in the new module.

Hardware and file support

The mk2 runs on an RP2040 and carries a USB-C socket on the front panel. Music Thing gives the measured noise floor as better than -86dB and playback latency as under 2ms, with support for files up to 24-bit/96kHz and microSD cards up to 2TB. Pitch control covers two octaves either side of normal speed, which the company describes as tape-like.

Modes cover speed, loop, tuner and pulse, each with sub-modes. The module stays 4HP and 25mm deep and draws 60mA on the +12V rail, or 85mA with the optional Radio Remote controller attached. Music Thing says it wants people to write alternative firmware for it, and plans to publish documentation and Hello World files.
