Starsky Carr has posted a comparison that sets Frap Tools' Magnolia against a Roland Jupiter-8, scoring the two eight-voice analog polysynths on price, features, reliability, repairability and sound.
The video runs matched tests through both instruments: warm pads, filters and envelopes with a pitch LFO, a pulse width modulation comparison, square and acid bass sounds, FM, wavefolding and high-pass filter tricks.
Carr's summary of the scorecard, as quoted by Synthtopia: “It wasn't close on most of those – and then the sound test threw me a curveball I wasn't expecting.”
The Magnolia has been shipping since January and Frap Tools lists it at €4,199 including VAT. Each of its eight voices has two oscillators, one with pulse width modulation and one with linear through-zero FM, a wavefolder and flip sync, and the voices can be split or layered across two patches at once. The Jupiter-8 is Roland's eight-voice analog polysynth from 1981.
