A new body of work driven by hardware inspiration
Jay Hosking’s latest release, Not even a poet can speak the whole truth, is a compact, high-energy album of IDM, glitch, and Drum & Bass compositions, all rooted in performance on the Torso S-4 sequencer.
The eight-track project was born out of spontaneous sessions that evolved into full arrangements with additional layering in the box. While the Torso S-4 provided the generative spark, the album showcases Hosking’s skill in shaping expressive, detailed electronic music that retains the immediacy of live performance.
A spectrum of intensity and emotion
Each piece balances intricate rhythmic programming with textured atmospheres, moving fluidly from meditative glitch to propulsive DnB. Tracks like Dreams must explain themselves and The word for world is forest build upon layered breakbeats and spectral processing, while others such as Imaginary countries take a softer, more melodic turn. Many samples originated from Hosking’s Patreon community and classic jungle packs, creating a dynamic blend of past and present influences.
Hardware as creative catalyst
Hosking, known for his detailed synth workflows and live compositions, has consistently shared insights into his music-making process on YouTube. This album continues that ethos, documenting not just the finished product, but the tools and mindset that sparked it. As he describes it, “the inspiration of the S-4 was enough to get me performing even before the song was finished.”
