I really, really love these headphones

I know that sounds simple, but it's the truth. The Audeze LCD-X headphones have genuinely stepped up my game when it comes to mixing, and for me, that's not a small thing.

I work out of a home studio. I have some acoustic treatment, but it's not the most ideal setup, and that's the reality for a lot of us. For a long time that meant making compromises, or making the trip to a properly treated studio whenever I needed to do serious work. Not always practical. Not always possible. Especially when you're deep in the process of preparing a live set and you just need to work.

I used to avoid mixing in headphones entirely

That might seem like a strange thing for someone reviewing headphones to admit, but it's honest. My ears used to get really tired, really fast. Mixing in headphones felt like a struggle, and I'd end up going to treated studios just to get the work done properly. I really avoided it.

With these headphones, that fatigue is just gone. I can sink into a long session and stay focused. The headphones use 106mm planar magnetic drivers with an open-back design that creates a natural, wide soundstage, and the distortion is extremely low (under 0.1% at 100dB SPL). I think that's a big part of why my ears don't wear out. There's no harshness accumulating over time. The sound stays clean and accurate however long you're in it, which means those late-night sessions can actually go the distance.

The real game changer came when I used the LCD-X headphones during a mixing session with my mastering engineer while I was preparing for a live set. I'd brought them along almost as an afterthought, and they ended up being essential.

Being in someone else's studio is always a little disorienting. He's used to his monitors, his environment, his way of hearing things. But with these on, I had a consistent listening reference that was mine. I could really hear what we needed to fix. And more importantly, I could take that same sound home with me afterward.

That's the part that's hard to explain until you experience it. I was able to hear what we were working on in his room and then carry that same sonic understanding back to my own studio, and continue preparing with confidence that I was hearing the same things. The work flowed between spaces instead of feeling like I was starting over every time I sat down somewhere different.
