Episode 40 of Piqued.fm, broadcast January 18, 2023, featured DSKO.
DSKO is Danny Kim, a multimedia artist working out of the San Jose and Bay Area synth scene under the name Distortion Productions. He's a professional motion picture sound designer with credits on over 50 feature films, a filmmaker, and a laser visualist. His own bio describes him as a classically trained cellist and techno house DJ who came to synthesizers as a teenager through industrial and synth wave, Front 242, Kraftwerk, Skinny Puppy, Depeche Mode.
His path ran through college radio DJing in Las Vegas, after-hours clubs in Hollywood and Koreatown, and a 2007 trip to Detroit's Movement Festival that he calls highly influential; he returned the following year to direct the "Inside" video for ADULT. He asks not to be pinned to a genre, the list he gives is electro, Italo disco, synth wave, techno, dub, electroclash, trip hop and ambient.
Outside his own performances he's a builder of the scene. In 2016 he founded Binary Society, a modular synthesizer event series in downtown San Jose that hosted Richard Devine, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, Lightbath, r beny and others. In 2018 he shifted that energy into Open Source, a print journal covering synthesizer culture and history, visual performance and the creative process, where he's editor-in-chief.
