Los Angeles based producer Sleepy Cat (Ken Chow) recently unleashed his new EP, Ascend - a jarring, stimulating record that focuses on the methodical introspection of cerebral techno. Known for his live Eurorack performances and inconspicuous production style, Sleepy Cat moves with instinctive intention as he propels his organic representation of electronic music. Through this seven-track collaborative EP that explores the separate dimensions of techno, he establishes a sonic unity that brings each independent world together.

Ascend reads as a reflection piece - an honest depiction of an artist looking inward for their voice rather than fixating on external distractions. Its cacophonous overtones feel deeply pensive, and driven by a kind of sonic madness that compels you to close your eyes and absorb each layer of synthesis.

Sleepy Cat spent nearly two years putting this body of work together as he joined forces with various LA producers such as Trovarsi, Solemn, and Insical to build this sensual edifice. However, on his opening solo track, “Ascend,” Chow sets the tone on his own. He manufactures a reckoning sound that arouses a cathartic anxiety, the synthetic, somber waves illustrate a vast ocean of unpredictability. 

With elements of improvisation, Sleepy Cat concentrates on organic compositional structures. In “Shadows,” Chow and Orly Gal build momentum without relying on predictable dynamics. Instead, by demonstrating the song’s propensity through a multitude of synthetic layers, the soundscape is charged with visceral tension.

By track three, Chow approaches from another sonic angle with producer Insical on the hypnosis, metallic track, “Hazed.” Riddled with mysterious uncertainty, the dungeon-dwelling composition has a primal pulse within an abstract space. Through iron-clashing textures that resemble raindrops across the stereo field, the track creates a sense of audible vastness. The embellishments become both recognizable and expansive.

As we leave one room and enter the next, “Demise of the Void” emerges as a jarring track that pulls us back to the warehouse. Co-produced with Secus, the composition shapes itself into a transcendental piece of body music designed for meditation. Its overt sound behaves like fire - steady yet undulating - while the track’s rising motion continues to expand upon its hypnotic momentum.

Staying within the warehouse space, Sleepy Cat turns to Trovarsi to unlock another world in their collaborative track, “Heat.” The composition carries a raw creative utility tailored for technoheads. Its classic techno motifs and rhythmic patterns establish a strong foundation for its preternatural, oscillating diversity. With equal distribution of mesmerism and functionality, the listener is given a choice to remain in their head or fully inhabit their body. 

By the penultimate track, “Derail,” Sleepy Cat unites with Solem and establishes a living organism of tribal beats within percolating synthesis. Capturing an intoxicating horde of sound that displaces movement through its sparring ambiance, the track is balanced by cathartic dark overtones within a spastic space that displays an elegant cinematic essence.

At the end of the journey, Sleep Cat teams up with Aztekan to construct "Artificial Emotions” - an enthralling, metallic piece that pulls somber tones from its percussive instrumentations. Its combination of reverb and delay is tension-binding allowing the track to hypnotize the listener while the consistent beat keeps them grounded.

Sleep Cat self-released the EP on his label ATRATR (Ascend To Reality, Awaken Thru Rhythm). Built around his passion for finding the organic essence inside the electronics, Chow's deliberate methodology is meant to create immersion. His motivation is to move blood through your body, and allow machines to arouse the spirit. His production style is clear and intentional - a space designed for deep thought and understanding the nuances of sound. Therefore, the process breeds self-equanimity.

This body of work is full of grit and primal instinct. Each track has a purpose, engineered to engulf your senses rather than merely occupy them. Chow and his collaborators crafted a space where the audience is invited to breathe, indulge, dance, and reflect as the body interacts with the music. Don’t sleep on Sleepy Cat.
