Michigan Synth Works has previewed the Digix0x, a digital emulation of the x0xb0x, at Knobcon 2026. The company says the project comes from the person who designed the original.

The x0xb0x was an analogue clone of the Roland TB-303, released in the mid-2000s as an open hardware project, and the Digix0x replaces those circuits with software. “From the creator of the iconic x0xb0x, this is an open source digital emulation of the device that started the DIY bug for so many people,” Michigan Synth Works said in its announcement.
Writing at CDM, Peter Kirn reports that the x0xb0x was co-created and co-marketed by Limor Fried and an unidentified German engineer, and that the engineer has resurfaced through Michigan Synth Works. Kirn writes that the creator “has spent several years modeling every aspect of the 303 sound” and that “everything is now digitally modeled”.
The reason given for the switch is supply. “The problem with the x0xb0x has become that the parts available a little over 20 years ago just aren’t around anymore,” CDM reports. Michigan Synth Works says the Digix0x will be fully open source, as the x0xb0x was.
Knobcon 2026 ran from 11 to 13 September at the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg in Schaumburg, Illinois. Michigan Synth Works already sells the LRB-303, a DIY 303 kit listed at $499, and an OS-x0x open source processor at $75. It has announced no price or release date for the Digix0x.
